The General
Without question, Robert Neyland is the most important figure in the history of UT football. In addition to his three separate stints as UT head coach, Neyland was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army. He was also a great innovator, favoring speed over strength and being one of the first coaches to study film. In total, Neyland coached the Volunteers for 21 seasons, guiding UT to six undefeated seasons, eight conference titles, and four national championships. He is arguably the best defensive coach in college football history. Between the 1938 and 1939 seasons, UT kept 17 consecutive shutouts, a streak that began when the Vols won their first national championship in 1938.
Hall of Fame Parade
Living up to Neyland’s legacy is virtually impossible, but UT has had a long line of Hall of Fame coaches that have maintained the program’s excellence over many decades. The likes of Bowden Wyatt, Doug Dickey, Johnny Majors, and Phillip Fulmer guided the program in the second half of the 20th century. Together, those coaches led the Volunteers to eight SEC titles, as well as a national championship under Dickey in 1967 and another under Fulmer in 1998.
Always Important
After Fulmer retired in 2008, UT struggled to remain a top-25 program and even suffered through several losing seasons. However, the Vols have always had a propensity for bouncing back. With a loyal fanbase and conference full of rivals, every UT football game holds great importance. Even when the program is down, that passion never goes away.
