About the Virginia Basketball
Virginia Basketball Tickets
Historically, the Virginia Cavaliers have had huge peaks and valleys on the basketball court. There was once a time when it was easy to find cheap Virginia basketball tickets. However, those days are long over. The Cavaliers are now one of the pre-eminent programs in college basketball. One could argue that the program is in the midst of a golden era, which is why fans should consider themselves lucky if they’re able to get their hands on last-minute Virginia basketball tickets and check out the Wahoos in person.
Coming Alive
UVA basketball didn’t truly come alive until the 1980s, but when it happened, it happened quickly. Under head coach Terry Holland, the Cavaliers won the NIT in 1980 and were in the Final Four a year later. The 1981 season was the first Final Four in program history and also kicked off the first of three straight ACC titles behind star players like Ralph Sampson and Jeff Lamp. Even after Sampson left, UVA made an improbable run back to the Final Four in 1984.
Tony the Great
After Holland’s tenure, UVA’s success became a little more erratic for the next couple of decades. But that started to change after the arrival of Tony Bennett as head coach in 2009. Within five years, Bennett turned UVA into an ACC powerhouse. The Cavs won four ACC regular-season championships in six years, a stretch in which they averaged nearly 30 wins per season, putting UVA basketball back on the national map.
Heartbreak and Triumph
In 2018, Virginia made history for all of the wrong reasons. After going 31-2 and winning both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, the Cavs became the first no. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament to lose to a no. 16 seed in the first round. It’s a nightmare that UVA might never live down. However, it didn’t deter Bennett and his team, who responded the following year by winning the national championship, reaching the top of the mountain after a disastrous fall and proving that the Cavaliers are here to stay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where Does Virginia Basketball Play?
John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville is the current home of Virginia basketball. While it bears the name of both Led Zeppelin’s bassist and the founder of the U.S. Navy, the arena was named after the father of UVA donor Paul Tudor Jones, who helped finance the venue and wanted its name to honor his late father. The arena opened in 2006 and has a capacity of over 14,500 fans, making it the largest basketball-only venue in the ACC. During that time, John Paul Jones has gained a reputation for providing the Cavs with a great home-court advantage.
