More About Tennessee Basketball

The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team has the unique burden of being overshadowed by both a historic football power and one of the most storied women’s basketball programs of all-time. Such a situation occasionally creates cheap Tennessee basketball tickets. However, the Vols have occasionally found their way into the spotlight. More importantly, the UT men’s basketball team has shown signs in recent years of emerging as one of the top programs in the SEC.

Good Ole Ray

The first time UT experienced sustained success on the basketball court was under head coach Ray Mears. He was known for wearing an orange blazer during games and is considered the father of UT basketball. Mears led the Volunteers to three SEC championships during his 14 seasons while also taking UT to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 1967. Of course, his biggest accomplishment in Knoxville may have been creating the phrase “Big Orange Country,” which became a rallying cry for the fanbase.

The Promised Land

The Volunteers were able to sustain moderate success in the years after Mears left the team. However, the program’s growth was limited until the arrival of Bruce Pearl in 2005. Pearl brought endless passion and enthusiasm to UT, quickly turning the Volunteers into one of the best teams in the SEC. He led UT to the NCAA Tournament in each of his six seasons at the school. Those six tournament appearances included three trips to the Sweet 16 and a run to the Elite Eight in 2010, which was uncharted territory for the Vols. While short-lived and tarnished by an NCAA investigation that eventually led to his firing, Pearl’s tenure at UT was proof that the Volunteers could build a winning program that’s worthy of being in the spotlight.
