More About the Jazz
From New Orleans to Utah
If you’ve had a hard time making the connection between “Utah” and “Jazz,” you’re not wrong. The team got its start in a place that matched its jazzy vibes a little better. The New Orleans Jazz was an expansion team that was founded in 1974. While the Jazz had some pretty decent draft picks at the time, New Orleans is a notoriously tough town for a ball team. With a lack of corporate sponsorship, a high amusement tax, and the prospect of being on the road for a month during Mardi Gras, the decision was made to shop around for a new home.
Team owners finally settled on Utah, based on the sport’s previous success with the Utah Stars from the then-defunct American Basketball Association. With no time to petition for a name change or even to update their jersey colors, the whole team pulled up stakes and relocated to Salt Lake City, becoming the Utah Jazz. And the name... well, it just stuck.
Slow But Steady
It took a while for the Jazz to gain their footing. They weren’t exactly a veteran franchise at the time of their move, so it wasn’t until the late ‘80s that the team really came together. Some restructuring and team-building saw the Jazz come into its own in the late ‘90s though, and the team eventually bagged Conference and Division titles in 1997 and 1998.
The Jazz would continue to perform well until 2008, adding three more division titles to its belt. A rebuilding phase would keep Utah out of the postseason for a few years, but things changed for the better in 2017 when the Jazz earned another division title. Is this an indicator that the Jazz are back in the saddle? Time will tell, but Utah fans are… well… jazzed! (We couldn’t help ourselves.)
