More About the Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans have a dramatic history. Starting out as the Charlotte Hornets, the franchise relocated from North Carolina to Louisiana in 2002 but kept their old name. However, following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, the Hornets were driven from New Orleans and became known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets from 2005 through 2007.
The franchise made their triumphant return to NOLA and continued to play as the Hornets until 2013 when the decision was made to relinquish the last vestiges of their original identity and rebrand as the Pelicans. They even went so far as to transfer the rights to the team name and official records back to the city of Charlotte, where a new expansion team was waiting to take on the mantle of the old name and identity.
Pretty Good for a “Brand New” Team
With the Pelicans throwing off the last vestiges of their old identity, they’ve truly come into their own as a franchise. They’ve faced their fair share of difficulties thanks to the aftermath of Katrina, but in the 16 seasons of play since relocating from Charlotte, the Pelicans have done pretty damn well for a “new” franchise.
How well are we talking? As of the 2018-19 season, the New Orleans Pelicans have a remarkably solid 610-686 regular season record. Not only that, but they’ve made it to the playoffs seven times during that time, winning two series victories and bagging one division title in the process. Will the Pelicans continue their march towards continued success? If this franchise keeps going in the direction they are now, it’s only a matter of time!
