More About the Grizzlies
Pop quiz: does Tennessee have grizzly bears? You’re probably thinking a hearty “no,” but you’d be wrong. There are grizzlies in Tennessee. The Memphis Grizzlies, one of the newest expansion teams in the NBA, might not seem like they belong down south, but this franchise has nonetheless put their hometown on the map when it comes to pro basketball.
From Vancouver to Memphis
So what’s up with the name? Little known fact: the Memphis Grizzlies started as the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995 – along with the Toronto Raptors – as part of the NBA’s push to expand into Canada. While the Raptors are still in the Great White North, the Grizzlies relocated to Memphis after the 2000-2001 season.
The new team was a big deal for the city of Memphis, considering that the Grizzlies would become their first pro sports team ever. Keeping the Grizzlies name doesn’t make much sense – grizzly bears make their home in the West – but if the New Orleans Jazz can relocate to Utah and keep their name, the Grizzlies can, too!
Consistent Contenders
Most expansion teams take a few years to get their footing, and the Grizzlies are no different. Their tenure in Vancouver was rather unremarkable, but moving to Memphis certainly lit a fire under those bear butts. It only took a couple years after the move for the Grizzlies to start making it to the postseason – and not just here and there as a fluke! From 2003 to 2016, the franchise made it to the playoffs a total of ten times. Not bad for a team that’s not even 25 years old!
While they’ve been showing their ferocity lately, Memphis has yet to take home any division or conference titles. With such a motivated team, though, it’s only a matter of time before they start racking up the wins. Turns out the Grizzlies are right where they belong!
