About James Taylor

James Taylor Tickets

When you think of great home-grown American artists, James Taylor is one of the first to come to mind. His multi-platinum discography and decade-spanning sound is part folk, part classic Americana. The Boston-born star has been working on his sound for most of his life, in fact he started playing the guitar when he was only 12. His love affair with acoustic music began when his family moved to North Carolina. As you can tell by the song “Carolina on My Mind”, he fell in love with the state and its local bluegrass/folk feel.

A Rocky Start

James Taylor wasn’t always the confident singer/songwriter we know now. In his teens, he committed himself to a psychiatric institution, for unknown reasons. During his time in the institution, he wrote countless songs, including some of his popular classics.

Upon release, James took his talent overseas and got signed with Apple Music, as their first American artist. He put out his debut album with them, but it didn’t have immediate success. Crestfallen and struggling with heroin usage, Taylor returned to the US, committing himself to an institution once again. In 1969 he played in the Newport Folk Festival before moving to LA to record a new album with the Warner Brothers.

Sweet, Successful, Baby James

James’ second album was the one that catapulted him to stardom. His song “Fire and Rain” charted at No. 3 for multiple weeks. The album itself charted the same, with other classics like the song “Sweet Baby James.” Technically, his third album “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon” is the one that won him a Grammy, for his cover of “You’ve Got a Friend.” He put out his greatest hits album in the late 1970s though that might have been premature. There have been countless tours, at least three more albums, and he’s not done yet!
