The Early Days

Dave Matthews moved from South Africa to America when he was young, but went back and forth a few times before settling in Charlottesville, Virginia after high school. He worked as a bartender at a jazz club, which he says was where he got the inspiration, and drive, to start a band. He thought about it for a few years, but pulled the trigger in 1990, recording a demo with musicians he met through the jazz club.

The demo went well locally, and the band started building a following. Their manager, Coran Capshaw, saw their potential and booked them at small venues all around the country. For the first few years, DMB played anywhere there was a stage, from beach parties to college campuses. It was the ultimate guerilla marketing tactic – and it worked!

The Bigtime

All that playing together and making a name for themselves worked out, as they got signed to a label in 1994. They then put out Under the Table and Dreaming, which charted on the Billboard 200 Album chart. Their second album, Crash, came out two years later, and their NYC Madison Square Garden tour date sold out the first day tickets went on sale. It only took DMB four years to establish themselves on the American music scene, and they haven’t budged from their successful spot since.
