About Wicked
Wicked Tickets
When The Wizard of Oz was first released in 1939, who could have guessed that 80 years later, a play based on it would still be entertaining people in the U.S. from coast to coast and all over the world? But that’s exactly what has happened with the musical Wicked, which was composed by Stephen Schwartz. Over 15 years after its debut, Wicked is still being performed on Broadway and all over the world.
From Book to Stage
While many connect Wicked to The Wizard of Oz, the play itself is not based on the original movie but rather a book ]called Wicked by Gregory Maguire that was published in 1995. Maguire’s book can be considered an alternative version of the classic story of Dorothy in the land of Oz that explores the relationship between good and evil in a far more mature manner. In other words, unlike The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is not for kids.
Instead of focusing on Dorothy and her friends, Maguire’s novel takes us to Oz before her arrival, focusing on the relationship between Elphaba, who we know as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. But the script from Schwartz takes things to another level, entertaining the audience with a captivating plot and incredible songs while also forcing them to be introspective about good, evil, and a person’s intentions. The result is a musical that won three Tony Awards, a Grammy, and is selling out theaters years after the original cast members left the production.
Sing-Along
In addition to offering compelling characters and a story that remains familiar to audiences, Wicked tickets have remained in high demand in large part because of the music. There are over 20 musical numbers throughout the show, including unforgettable favorites like “The Wizard and I,” “No Good Deed,” and “Defying Gravity.” Every song adds something special to the musical and adds to the themes the material covers. Schwartz didn’t set out to compose Wicked as if it were just another musical, and it shows. It’s something special and arguably one of the best musicals of all-time.
