About the Detroit Red Wings

Red Wings Tickets

One of the Original Six, the Detroit Red Wings have been one of the most consistently successful NHL franchises of all times. Many of the greats have worn Red Wings jerseys over the decades, making Detroit the true home of hockey.

Early Successes

The Red Wings were a powerhouse team and a regular contender from the beginning, as they took home Lord Stanley’s cup three times in the 1930s and 1940s. Things on the ice would heat up even more when Gordie Howe began his career in 1949 as a forward for Detroit, contributing to yet another Stanley Cup victory in 1950 alongside other Red Wings luminaries like Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel.

Howe and the Red Wings were inseparable for years, helping Detroit become a Stanley Cup winning machine for four years in a row. Second only to Wayne Gretzky with 801 career goals, Howe appropriately earned himself the nickname Mr. Hockey!

The Dead Wings

The Red Wings seemed unstoppable for years — up until the 1967 NHL expansion. Detroit found it a real struggle to compete in the altered landscape of the league for another few decades. This was a tough time for Red Wings fans, having to deal with their beloved team referred to derisively as the “Dead Wings.”

Yet the warm fuzzy thoughts of the Red Wings’ past supremacy would keep Detroit fans loyal until the 1995 season. Things were finally looking up: with players like Nicklas Lidstrom, Brandan Shanahan, and Sergei Fedorov, and with Steve Yzerman’s leadership on the ice, the Red Wings emerged back on top when they reclaimed the championship. The Philadelphia Flyers didn’t know what hit them when the Red Wings swept them for the Stanley Cup at the end of the 1995-96 season!

We’re Back, Baby!

The next several years would belong to the Red Wings. The 1990s saw another three Stanley Cups in a row go to Detroit, drawing much-deserved comparisons to the Gordie Howe era of the Red Wings. Meanwhile, the 2001-02 Red Wings roster was composed of absolute monsters on the ice, with Pavel Datsyuk, Chris Chelios, Dominik Hasek, Luc Robitaille, and Brett Hull joining the already impressive roster.

Stacking the deck like this — something only possible in the pre-salary cap days — helped the Red Wings nab the Stanley Cup yet again, totaling four championship wins in a decade. Even after the salary cap, Detroit seemed unstoppable when they took the championship again in the 2007-08 season.  In fact, between 1984 and 2016, the Red Wings never missed a playoff season. And that’s why the Red Wings are the best at what they do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the Red Wings play?

The Red Wings have played at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena since 2017, which is also the home of the Detroit Pistons. Prior to the move, Red Wings games were played at the Joe Louis Arena starting in 1979.

When do Red Wings tickets go on sale?

Red Wings tickets go on sale well before the beginning of the NHL regular season, so it’s easy to pick and choose which games you’d like to see in advance.

When is the best time to buy cheap Red Wings tickets?

With tickets being available so far ahead to time, there’s no rush to buy cheap Red Wings tickets. In fact, it’s often in your best interest to wait until the last minute because ticket sellers generally drop their prices as game day approaches. Unsold tickets don’t make anyone any money, so ticket resellers are even more motivated to move their inventory right before the game.

What’s the best way to buy cheap Red Wings tickets?

The best way to buy cheap Red Wings tickets is to use an online marketplace. It’s the safest way to guarantee you’re getting legit cheap tickets at the fairest price, even when you take into account service fees.
