About The Showbox

The Showbox

The Showbox is a music venue located in the heart of downtown Seattle. The venue originally opened in 1939 as the Showbox Theater and has been known by several other names over the years. It was also closed from 1948 to 1953 and from 1963 to 1967 but has always come back. Dozens of prominent musical acts have performed at The Showbox, making it a critical part of music history in Seattle, which was an epicenter for the Jazz Age and later the home of grunge music. In 2019, The Showbox was given landmark status by the City of Seattle’s Landmark Preservation Board, saving it from destruction and keeping it an important venue in the Seattle music scene. The Showbox currently has a capacity of 1,150 guests.

Where are the Best Places to Sit at the Showbox

Virtually all tickets for performances at The Showbox are general admission. This means that guests are encouraged to arrive early so that they can claim a spot on the floor. However, reserved tables are also available during most shows for guests who want to have an assigned seat rather than stand in the general admission area. Information about upgrading to a reserved table can be found on The Showbox’s website.

Tips for Visiting the Showbox

There is a lounge located next to The Showbox called Kerns Music Shop. It offers both food and drinks and opens two hours prior to any show at The Showbox. Anyone buying food or drink from Kerns Music Shop will be among the first guests welcomed inside The Showbox prior to a show. If you want to stake out a spot close to the stage, this is one way to do it. Also, Kerns Music Shop is an important landmark in the history of the Seattle music scene, so any music enthusiast will appreciate spending time there.

Food to Try at the Showbox

There are two bars inside The Showbox that offer a wide selection of drinks and a limited food menu. However, the food options are somewhat limited, so visitors may want to consider a meal before or after the show at one of the nearby restaurants. Located on the same block as The Showbox are Pike Brewing Company, a traditional brewpub, and DeLaurenti Food & Wine, an Italian cafe. One block north of the venue you can find Radiator Whiskey, which offers a wide variety of meat dishes and several varieties of whiskey.
