About St. James Theatre

St James Theatre

With 1,710 seats over three levels, the St James Theatre in Manhattan is one of the most iconic and long-lived musical theater venues in the world, let alone Broadway. Located at 246 W. 44th St. in Midtown, it’s named for its even more famous counterpart, the long-demolished St James’s Theatre, which at one time had been a part of London’s famous St James’s District in Westminster.

The History of the St James Theatre

Opened in 1927 after being constructed on the former site of the original Sardi’s restaurant, this ornate, opulent venue was actually known as The Erlanger Theatre in honor of its owner, theatrical producer Abraham Erlanger. After he passed in 1930, his family renamed the site to St James. It’s changed ownership several times over the decades and has been renovated and refurbished constantly to keep it in good condition, making it one of the oldest and most consistently successful Broadway playhouses of all time.

What Makes St James Theatre Events So Special?

St James is the perfect place to see any Broadway show. With its double balconies, its ornate interior, and its easy-to-find Midtown location, it’s got a lot going for it. Combine that with the reputation it has for showing only the best and brightest new musicals destined to become major hits, and you’re almost guaranteed to have a magical, unforgettable time!
