About Pantages Theatre

Pantages Theatre

A stunning example of classic Hollywood Art Deco design, the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles is one of the most well-known live performance venues in the country. With a history spanning more than 75 years and an ever-growing list of performers and shows, the Pantages Theatre is a must-visit venue for anyone visiting Hollywood!

The History of the Pantages Theatre

Constructed in 1930 and originally designed to serve as both a movie house and a vaudeville venue, the Pantages has a long and storied history. Transitioning to primarily show films during the Great Depression and sold to eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes in 1949, the building became even more famous for becoming the first venue for hosting the Academy Awards from 1949 through 1959.

The Pantages continued to serve as a high-profile movie theater until 1977 when it was shut down temporarily and rehabilitated for showcasing live performances once more. Since then, the Pantages has become one of the most successful live theater venues in Hollywood, hosting Broadway-level runs of shows like The Lion King and Wicked, and this trend continues on through today.

What Makes Pantages Theatre Events So Special?

The Pantages is right out of history. Where else can you say you’ve sat in the same 2,700-seat theater that legends of the silver screen like Laurence Olivier, Jane Wyman, Olivia de Hallivand, Gregory Peck, and Kirk Douglas? Cool, right?
