About Chicago Theatre

Chicago Theatre

There are only a few landmark theaters that everyone knows by sight. Whether it’s Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, Mann’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, or any other of these iconic places, they always stand out – and that’s just what the Chicago Theatre does as the best of the best. This 3,600-seat music venue has been enchanting audiences for nearly a century in one form or another and is set to do so for another hundred years.

The History of the Chicago Theatre

Opened in 1921 under the name of the Balaban and Katz Chicago Theatre, this legendary theater began life as the flagship venue for a movie theater chain of the same name. Built in the Neo-Baroque French Revival style, it was an immediate hit, and huge crowds flocked to the Chicago Theatre during its premiere. For more than 40 years, the theater hosted live events as well as theatrical releases, only slowing down in the 1970s and 1980s as the economy worsened.

Thankfully, in 1986 a major push to get the theater declared a national landmark revitalized the venue, resulting in a major refurbishment that brought it back to its former glory. The theater has changed hands a few times since then, but it has since become a fabulous concert hall and performance space that draws critical acclaim from around the world.

What Makes Chicago Theatre Events So Special?

Have you ever stepped inside a completely restored 1930s-era concert hall? It’s like traveling back in time. Opulent, ornate, and breathtaking, every inch covered in glorious detail, the Chicago Theatre must be seen to be believed. Combine that with the opportunity to enjoy some of the finest musical performers ever, and you can’t go wrong with an event at this legendary theater!
