About Caesars Superdome

Superdome

The Mercedes Benz Superdome is the mecca for sporting events held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Often referred to as the Superdome, it is the home of NFL’s New Orleans Saints. The Superdome hosts the Sugar bowl, New Orleans bowl, the Bayou classic and, believe it or not, the Battle of the Bands, too.

The History

The Superdome opened on August 3, 1975, and was called the Louisiana Superdome. The stadium wasn’t even one year old when it hosted the Pro Bowl, on January 26, 1976. Another memorable Superdome moment took place on September 15, 1978, when Mohammad Ali went against Leon Spinks in a rematch that awarded Ali the Heavyweight title for boxing.

With a seating capacity of 76,486, the Superdome can host huge events like the Super Bowl. The stadium can also accommodate 73,432 fans for basketball, and 56,941 people for baseball.

On August 29, 2005, the Superdome was used as a shelter for those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Due to the extensive damages caused by the storm, the Superdome had to close its doors for renovations and repairs. It reopened on September 25, 2006.

Depending on the season, fans can watch world championship wrestling matches, boxing, gymnastics championships, baseball games, and of course football games at the Superdome.

Since the Superdome can accommodate up to 76,486 people, it’s really common to find a concert going on at the Superdome when there are no games. Many musical talents have played here, including Kenny Rogers, Kiss, Rolling Stones, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, and Miranda Lambert.

What’s so special about the Superdome?

After hurricane Katrina devastated the Superdome, the stadium needed a serious facelift. During renovations, the Superdome got new end zone scoreboards, lighting, and seats.

In 2016 the Superdome earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to be one of the most popular venues in New Orleans.
