About Aragon Ballroom

Aragon Ballroom

Located in Uptown Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom is one dance hall and performance space that has been one of the Windy City’s biggest claims to fame for nearly a hundred years. With its impressive Moorish architectural style outside and an interior design that resembles nothing so much as an ancient Spanish village, this venue has been attracting top-flight talent from around the country and beyond literally for generations.

The History of the Aragon Ballroom

The Aragon Ballroom was constructed in the 1920s, opening its doors in 1926. It was an immediate hit, drawing some 18,000 patrons a week, and would continue to be a major draw until 1958, when the cocktail lounge next door burned down. The Aragon Ballroom closed down shortly for repairs, but attendance declined until the mid-1960s.

At that point, the Aragon changed hands several times into the 1970s, where it did stints as a roller rink, a boxing venue, and even a disco, before returning to its roots. In 1973 dancing and music returned to the Aragon Ballroom, and it’s been full steam ahead since then, with the venue becoming famous enough to be the backdrop of major tours and even a few movie sets.
